Generals about nail

nail compartments:
A nail consists of several different parts, including:

1- nail plate: this part is laid on the finger as is known as the major part of nail.

2- free edge: the part of nail plate that grows beyond the finger tip.

3- nail bed: is the soft tissue that lies just beneath the nail plate.

4- cuticle: is the overlapping skin around the nail. A normal, healthy cuticle should be loose & pliable.

5- skin folds: the folds located around nail plate and support it. there are lateral skin folds and proximal skin fold.

6- matrix: it is the nail generating part, resides beneath the proximal skin fold. it contains nerves and vessels.

7- lunula: is the pale half moon located at the base of the nail. it is more prominent in thumb.

Nail growth: Your nails grow from the area under your cuticle (matrix). As new cells grow, older cells become hard and compacted and are eventually pushed out toward your fingertips. So, nail is made of layers of compacted dead cells. keratin is the major molecule remaining by this condensation. It is a protein and is composed of layers, interconnected by chains and cross links. elements like sulfur play a major role in the chains and layer. The quality and composition of layers, cross links and chains determine the strength of nail and it is determined itself by genetic, nutrition and environmental factor like chemicals.

healthy nail looks pink because of the capillaries of the nail bed.
