Generals About Nail
Nail Anatomy:
Nail consists of several parts, including:
1 - Nail Plate: This part is laid on the finger and is known as the major part of nail.
2 - Free Edge: The part of nail plate that grows beyond the finger tip.
3 - Nail Bed: The soft tissue that lies just beneath the nail plate.
4 - Cuticle: The overlapping skin around the nail. A normal, healthy cuticle should be loose & pliable.
5 - Skin Folds: The folds located around nail plate that support it. there are lateral skin folds and proximal skin fold.
6 - Matrix: It is the nail generating part, resides beneath the proximal skin fold. it contains nerves and vessels.
7 - Lunula: Is the pale half moon located at the base of the nail. The lunula is in fact the front end of the matrix. it is more prominent in thumb.
Nail Production:
The matrix is responsible for the production of the cells that become the nail plate. The width and thickness of the nail plate is determined by the size, length, and thickness of the matrix, while the shape of the fingertip itself determines if the nail plate is flat, arched, or hooked. The matrix will continue to grow as long as it receives nutrition and remains in a healthy condition. As new nail plate cells are incubated, they emerge from the matrix round and white to push older nail plate cells forward; and in this way yet older cells become compressed, flat, and translucent, making the pink color of the capillaries in the nail bed below visible.
Keratin is the major molecule remaining by this condensation. It is a protein and is composed of layers, interconnected by chains and cross links. The quality and composition of layers, cross links and chains determine the strength of nail
Nail Growth:
The overall growth of the nail within one month is approximately 3mm. However this does vary from person to person. There are many contributing factors such as; weather, health, age and a well balanced diet. Growth is accelerated in the summer, during pregnancy and during sleep. Poor blood circulation, malnutrition, certain illnesses and some medications can slow down the growth rate. Each nail grows at a different rate. The smallest nail that we often refer to as our “pinkie” is the in fact the slowest, then the thumbs. The index finger generally grows at an accelerated rate in comparison to the others.
Rospina, providing essential nutrients for matrix, greatly improves nail growth. Moreover, It strengthens the chains and cross links in keratin.
Healthy Nail Appearance:
Nail is made up of a protein named keratin. It is translucent and reflects the underneath finger tip capillaries. Because of that, a normal and healthy nail looks pink. Any factor changing the capillaries and/or the nail composition can alter this color.
